Heartbeat (2019)

Just after the 2016 election, I was approached by a producer who knew me from my acting and writing. She wanted to include me as the first time Director in an anthology of films created by female auteurs, the premise being "Films that imagined a future where one law proposed by the first term Trump Presidency were taken to their logical end". Unfortunately my script proved prescient, in a world where Roe v Wade has been overturned, a woman is arrested for having a miscarriage. It is a reflection not just of my fears for society, but of my experience as a woman who had multiple miscarriages and had to navigate healthcare providers who at times treated me as a vessel and not a person. We sought to reflect the deep anxiety of pregnancy and pregnancy loss, contrasted with the entitlement of others, set in a world seeking to control women.
